Key differences

What changes
in daily use?

Here’s where the two apps take a different approach.

Hardware and software are different tools.

Both apps control compatible monitor hardware. Display Dimmer also includes gamma dimming, which changes the image rather than the physical backlight. Twinkle Tray 1.17.2 has no gamma-dimming control. [3]

Compare the free features, not just the download.

Twinkle Tray includes schedules, app profiles and hotkeys for free. Display Dimmer includes a limited set in Free; Pro expands their number and display scope, and adds unlimited software temperature control. [2]

Look at which controls you will actually use.

Twinkle Tray has a concise CLI for brightness and VCP commands. Display Dimmer Pro has a documented local API and broader CLI for display targeting, state, brightness, contrast and temperature. Twinkle Tray exposes more monitor-specific controls in its interface. [1]

How they’re built.

Display Dimmer is built with WPF and .NET; Twinkle Tray uses Electron and Node.js. Those are different approaches to building a Windows app, but they say little about the experience on your PC. [5]
